EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE
Here we will discus about examination malpractice, definition, causes, history, concept and lot more in Nigeria education.
Examination malpractice is a phenomenon which disturbs all the stakeholders in education –
teachers, parents, Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Ministry of Education Officials, examination bodies like the West African Examination Council (WAEC), National Examination Council (NECO), National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), etc. More so, right from primary to tertiary institutions, examination malpractice has become the order of the day in Nigeria. This has seriously affected the quality of education in Nigeria, so much so that some foreign institutions tend to derecognize the products of Nigeria’s educational system, Thomas (2005). Ameh (2003) in Diwa (2006) defines examination as an official test of a learner’s ability in a given discipline or subject through written activity whereas malpractice can occur due to poor interest, attention and determination to read and pass examination or for fear to fail examination. Examination malpractice as defined by Oluyeba and Daramola, (2001) cited in Buoro, 2003: 103 and Aliyu, (2006) is any misbehaviour shown by candidates or an individual saddled with the responsibility of conducting examination in or outside the examination hall, before, during or after the paper.
